Preparing for Excellence: A Two-Day Teacher Training for Summer Math Camp Instructors
As we prepare for our annual summer math camp, we held a two-day teacher training session on July 3rd and 4th, designed to equip our instructors with the tools and techniques they need to deliver successful math classes. This training was for our current summer math camp instructors and potential future instructors who share our passion for mathematics education.
Teacher Training Day 1: Introduction to Teaching
Welcome and Program Overview
The training began with a warm welcome from our CEO Levent Koch, who outlined the goals and vision for this year’s summer math camp. The importance of creating an engaging, supportive, and challenging learning environment that fosters a love for mathematics was emphasized.
Love of Teaching and Why We Teach
A segment was dedicated to reflecting on the love of teaching and understanding the deeper reasons behind choosing this profession. This helped in rekindling the passion for teaching and reinforcing the commitment to student success.
Student-Centered vs. Teacher-Centered Teaching
We discussed the differences between student-centered and teacher-centered teaching approaches, highlighting the benefits of making students active participants in their learning journey.
Preparing Lesson Plans and Engaging Students
Participants learned how to prepare effective lesson plans and engage students actively. This session covered strategies to sustain a positive learning environment, manage classroom dynamics, and promote student involvement.
Practical Assignments
Participants were assigned to prepare a lesson plan and conduct a demo class the next day. This practical exercise would allow them to apply what they learned and receive constructive feedback from peers and trainers.
Teacher Training Day 2: Enhancing Skills and Understanding the Digital SAT
Digital SAT Overview
The second day focused on preparing our teachers to help students excel in the digital SAT. We began with an overview of the digital SAT format, including key differences from the traditional SAT. The discussion covered the number of questions, the adaptive second module, time management per question, and the use of the online calculator.
Strategies for Success
Teachers were instructed the previous day to prepare a 15-minute lesson plan. They were given the task of teaching this lesson to the class. This hands-on approach provided teachers with the opportunity to practice their skills in a supportive environment through role-playing scenarios.
Demo Classes Presentation
Participants presented their demo classes, demonstrating their understanding of the digital SAT content and teaching strategies. This session was crucial for teachers to refine their teaching methods and receive feedback.
Looking Ahead
The two-day training session was a resounding success, leaving our instructors inspired and ready to embark on this summer’s math camp journey. By investing in our instructors, we ensure they are well-prepared to create a stimulating and nurturing environment for our students.
As we look forward to the upcoming summer math camp, we are confident that our dedicated and well-trained teachers will make a profound impact on the lives of our students. With their passion for teaching and their newly acquired skills, they are ready to inspire the next generation of mathematicians.
