• I was hoping to learn algebra so when I get to that level I will be at the top of my class. I reached my goal by doing my homework and doing my work. The teacher was always nice. At the end of the camp, I feel good and I’m more confident with algebra.

Our first free “Summer Math Camp” was held between August 1 and 12, 2022 at Alaaka Association, Newark. 9 students attended the camp that started at 9 am and ended at 1 pm daily.

The camp was a success.

Students were also offered snacks and lunch for free that were provided by the New York Academy and the Alaaka Association.

The goals of the camp were to:

  • refresh students’ prior math knowledge,
  • develop their skills and understanding of algebra topics,
  • prepare students for upcoming algebra classes.

When students walked into the class, they were given a warp-up task for 5-10 mins that was followed by a review of math topics. Independent practice and collaboration with peers were part of the daily routine at the camp. Students were given assignments and an account at Khan Academy for each of them was opened so that they could continue studying math on their own even after the camp.
